Course overview

Application will open in September 2026.


This course is for nurses and other professionals involved in phlebotomy.


On this course, you will be given training in phlebotomy, including practice on simulation trainers and a short theoretical assessment. You should bring equipment from your clinical area, such as blood bottles, vacutainer needles and a tourniquet.


After completing this course, successful candidates are required to undertake a period of supervised practice to become competent in this skill. It is your responsibility to arrange this practice and secure a suitably qualified assessor.


We also offer Cannulation and Phlebotomy, please see separate entry course SD 35, this option is not normally suitable for healthcare assistants unless they are specially supported by their line managers to undertake this role, however they can undertake the Phlebotomy Only option.



Learning Outcomes

During this study day, participants will be given training in phlebotomy only, including practice on simulation trainers and a short theoretical assessment. Participants should bring equipment from their clinical area, such as blood bottles, vacutainer needles, a period of supervised practice is required after attendance. 



Assessment

Attendees could gain academic credit by completing a portfolio module in which evidence of the application of learning gained in practice as a result of attendance of this short course is demonstrated
