Course overview
The course introduces students to the fundamentals and key building blocks of a health system. The course adopts a global perspective utilizing cases and examples from low and middle-Income and high-Income countries. Specific attention is given to current challenges facing health systems, including burden of diseases and equity. The course also provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge on specific countries and health conditions.

- Pass mark - 50%
- Essay on functionality and performance of a specific building block in a named health system.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Define the key concepts, processes, and functions of health systems.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of health systems including various models, relevant stakeholders, interest groups and challenges and barriers to universal health care.
- Critically analyse policy and empirical evidence on health systems including comparative analysis of global systems.
- Appraise health system research, identify health system gaps, and develop a convincing policy brief that can be useful for policymakers.
