Course overview
This course is only open to selected University of Maryland students.
This module provides students with the opportunity to critically appraise some of the major theoretical perspectives and the underlying values that have influenced and shaped the epistemology of social work. Furthermore, a range of approaches and models of intervention will be evaluated in the context of their credibility and effectiveness in enabling people with lived experience to benefit from the helping process

Learning Outcomes
1. Critically appraise a range of theoretical perspectives, key approaches and models of intervention, and their underpinning epistemology that inform social work practice. 2. Critically reflect upon the theories that inform the concept of social justice within the context of oppression, inequality and diversity, and their relevance to social work. 3. Apply a critical understanding of social theory that demonstrates reflection on the complex nature of people, ideas, assumptions, and values encountered in practice. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the history and development of the social work profession.
