Course overview

This module is for qualified healthcare practitioners who are new to working in general practice (or within six months of starting in this area) who would like to develop their knowledge of general practice nursing.

To undertake the module, you will need to be employed in general practice nursing and have the support of your employer.

The module aims to provide the skills, knowledge and attitudes required for current competent practice. As well as developing your fundamental clinical skills, the module will give you an understanding of the unique challenges of working in primary care.

An example of topics covered: Asthma and COPD, hypertension, CVD, AF and anticoagulation, Diabetes management, contraception and sexual health, travel health, cervical cytology, immunisation and more.

Upon successful completion of this module as a standalone entity, credit gained could be utilised as part of the PgDiP Enhanced Professional Practice for level 7.


Learning Outcomes

You will enhance your skills and develop knowledge by reviewing current theory and practice, enabling you to perform the role of general practice nurse.


Assessment

There are two parts of assessment and students must pass both elements in order to successfully complete the module.

  1. Written assignment – you will be required to write a 4000-word essay outlining an audit proposal for completion within a primary care setting.  The audit proposal should introduce a topic, discuss the need and rationale, explore the current literature surrounding the chosen topic, and explore how the audit might be constructed, (you are not required to complete the audit, nor present results or findings).  
  2. Practice Assessment Portfolio (PAP) – you will complete a portfolio of core and negotiated clinical and non-clinical skills with a practice assessor. This must be a senior practice nurse of GP.

  1. The role and scope of the general practice nursing
  2. Quality and risk management in relation to contemporary health policy.
  3. Clinical management of common long-term conditions
  4. The context of the public health role of community and general practice nurses: related to health promotion, education and protection.
  5. The NHS Constitution Values and the themes associated with the 6 Cs will be weaved through each stage/component of the module.
  6. The context of the public health role of community and general practice nurses: related to health promotion, education and protection
  7. Communication skills including negotiation and influencing

  4. Group discussions and peer review
  5. Action learning sets will provide a varied learning experience.
