Course overview
This module meets the requirements for Health Education England's qualification in specialism for Adult Critical Care Nursing programmes. It is for qualified healthcare professionals working in critical care settings who have support from a clinical manager and a qualified practice assessor/mentor.
This module will consolidate your competence and develop your proficiency in relation to the in depth, detailed understanding of altered homeostasis/pathophysiology in order to assess and manage critical care patients effectively. The module will also enable you to appreciate, critique and synthesise contemporary scientific knowledge relating to the impact, assessment, clinical presentation and management of patients requiring complex healthcare interventions.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will gain confidence and proficiency in meeting the objectives of your professional role and the role of your organisation and be able to:
- Demonstrate a systematic and detailed understanding of altered homeostasis / pathophysiology due to impaired health
- Critically evaluate, interpret and deploy advanced assessment skills in order to effectively care for service users requiring complex healthcare interventions
- Effectively synthesise contemporary scientific, evidence based information to inform and rationalise clinical judgements
- Meet the requirements of the Step 2 National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care
- Reflect upon acquired knowledge, identifying areas for further development and recognising the impact of knowledge upon clinical practice
Assessment
Completion of the Step 2 National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care and a reflective essay - 100% weighting, pass mark 50%.
